We are grateful to the Malaysian Bar for recognising our consultant, Dato’ Mah Weng Kwai, with the 2025 Malaysian Bar Lifetime Achievement Award (MBLAA) at Le Méridien Kuala Lumpur on 24 October 2025. This Award celebrates members whose lifetime of service has strengthened the rule of law and benefited the public. For us at MahWengKwai & Associates (MWKA), it is a timely reminder that the profession is at its best when independence, fairness and service guide every decision.
“The honour is mine, but the journey belongs to all of us who believe in justice.”
In his acceptance speech, Dato’ Mah thanked the Bar, the Selection Committee and Mr Christopher Leong, and then turned from biography to purpose. He reflected on the Bar’s evolution since his call in 1972: the voice may have been smaller then, but the convictions were already loud. He paid tribute to past recipients who defended the vulnerable and gave voice to the voiceless, and he reminded us that the law must work for people.
“The law is not a business; it is a practice. Not merely a profession; it is a calling to serve.”
He spoke of service across every pillar of justice – namely at the Bar, on the Bench and in public institutions – not as a list of roles but as lessons for the next generation: that independence is a daily habit; that clear advice and plain language are forms of respect to clients and to the court; and that the dignity of the court rests in fair process. He urged young lawyers to make good choices each day, to prepare thoroughly, to advise clients with courage, to practise with civility, and to turn up where it matters: at general meetings, in legal aid and on Bar Council committees.
He also looked ahead at the work to be done. Environmental and community-impact disputes will grow in urgency; market fairness will be shaped by competition law and tribunal practice; and, if established, a Human Rights Tribunal could give sharper effect to SUHAKAM’s work. “Volunteering with St John Ambulance of Malaysia,” he noted, “I have seen first-hand how floods devastate communities, with the most vulnerable bearing the heaviest burdens.” Justice, he added with a smile, is not “just ice”; it must be warm with humanity, clear in language and fair in action.
At MWKA, we aim to incorporate these values and habits consistently into our lives. Our lawyers take part in Bar Council committees, including Agalya J Munusamy in the Women’s Rights Committee and the Committee on AMLA, Cassandra Nicole Thomazios and Anis Mohd Sohaimi in the Human Rights Committee, Elissanur Suraya in the Human Rights Committee and the Animal Rights Committee and Jason Lim in the Human Rights Sub-committee, because a strong and independent Bar depends on members who serve. In our daily work, we strive for clear advice, respectful advocacy and writing that is precise and plain.
Once again, congratulations, Dato’ Mah. We also thank the Malaysian Bar and the MBLAA Selection Committee for honouring a member, whose life has been devoted to strengthening institutions and serving the public. To our clients and colleagues, thank you for your trust and support as we continue this work together.
