MWKA would like to congratulate our Senior Associates, Diana Cheak & John Chan, for effectively completing the service of their six-year Public Service Department or Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam (JPA) scholarship bond under the Scholarship Talent Attraction and Retention (STAR) Initiative in June and July 2020 respectively.

The STAR Initiative is a collaborative effort between JPA and TalentCorp which allows JPA scholars to serve their government bond in the private sector as a way of giving back to the nation.
Diana Cheak and John Chan read law in Universiti Malaya (UM) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) respectively from 2009 to 2013 under JPA scholarships. JPA scholarships require scholars to serve their bonds in the government sector after graduation. However, it is common that scholars are not called to join the government service upon graduating in their respective fields.

In 2013, Diana and John joined the Firm as pupils in the chambers of our Managing Partner, Raymond Mah. Upon completing their pupillage, they joined the Firm as Associates in June and July 2014 respectively and thereafter applied to serve their JPA scholarship bond in MWKA under the STAR Initiative. Their application to serve and MWKA’s application to become a STAR Employer were accepted without any hassle. In 2019, the Firm recognized Diana and John as Senior Associates.

In line with the STAR Initiative, MWKA supports and encourages government scholars to serve their scholarship bonds, develop their careers with leading Malaysian employers and give back to Malaysia.
